UFO Halloween Outdoor Decoration DIY Project

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I tend to get pretty excited to decorate the front yard for the neighborhood and passers-by.

I enjoy projects and am always on the look out for something new to build for my yard decorations.

Considering all of the hype this past year around UFOs, I figured it was time to challenge myself and begin a new project centered on an alien invasion.

So, if you’re looking to build a UFO for Halloween, then this is the blog you were looking for so make sure you save this page because I will posting the steps as I get them done. There will also be a video.

STEP 1 – Find some parts around the house

I wandered around my home and shed looking for anything that could be used towards a nice big UFO and decided this old patio umbrella has the perfect form already to be a large piece of the UFO. The umbrella measures about 8-9 ft across so it is a good size for this project.

Our old red umbrella is going to have a new life as a UFO!

If you don’t have an old umbrella laying around, I bet you can find a cheap one on Facebook Marketplace. We actually bought this new at a local store for less than $20 a few years ago so I know they can be found fairly cheap.

My next step was to cut it down in size in order to bring it closer to the ground so I took about 3 ft off of the pole and used the old umbrella base as its main support for now. I will implement landing gear later in this project.

STEP 2 – Paint it so it looks less like an umbrella

We can’t have a red UFO so I needed to paint it first. I went to my local Lowe’s and bought three containers of Gray Primer spray paint in order to give the color a base.

The paint doesn’t need to be perfect and will be pretty blotchy looking. The gray covered up the red as much as I needed so it was time to move on to the next step.

STEP 3 – Make it look metallic

Next, I sprayed over top of the gray a Silver metallic paint. This gave it more of a metallic look and will make it more reflective with the lighting I use at night.

Starting to look a little less like cloth.

The next step is going to be building a base for the craft, a pilot dome and adding landing gear and a ramp. The next steps will be posted shortly as soon as they are completed so make sure you follow this blog.

I will also post a video of this build on my Youtube channel – Thrifty Dad – please subscribe there as well

Thanks for following!

The link to Part 2 will be here once posted.
